Day 3: Phew...

So we made it to Phoenix. After descending down from Joshua Tree National Park, we climbed back up into the desert in Arizona.  The truck was running hot the whole time so we had the windows down and the heat blasting.  Tomorrow we going to have Beluga checked out, but it may be time for a bigger beluga.

Otherwise, the roads have been fine, the weather's nice (and hot), and we thankfully haven't run into any Arizona Papiere Bitte craziness. I'm going to try to get some photos online tonight.

  1. OK here I go again. Typed in a nice story and then when I selected what profile to use it logged me in and blew away my message.
Anyway . . . You may need a large(r) external transmission cooler to take that heat away from the regular radiator. transmissions run a lot hotter than engines and if the built in cooler is part of the radiator it is using your regular cooling capacity to cool the transmission as well as the engine. Also it might need an extra auxiliary electric fan to force a bit more air through the radiator anyway.
Depending on axle gearing you may need to kick it out of overdrive so that the engine is not laboring as hard. A few more revs but running more freely is both easier on the engine and might even give better mileage on the climbs. If it has an axle ratio that is great for cruising the freeways with light to no loads then that is likely not the right thing for being more heavily loaded. Kicking it out of overdrive is the same effect as a higher numerical ratio. That all might make the transmission run cooler as well.
Hope you get it figured out. Lots of good sources for RV setups in Phoenix.
